Doppler radar comes of age

With radar development headed by David Atlas and Robert Serafin, the 1972 National Hail Research Experiment (NHRE) became the first program to successfully deploy more than one Doppler radar. Instruments from NOAA and the University of Chicago were soon joined by two cloud-physics radars created at NCAR. Highly portable, the new radars were among the first to include real-time color displays.
