Weather data from the ends of the Earth
In the 1970s, NCAR developed the portable automated mesonet (PAM) system, deploying the first one in 1976. PAM was a network of compact, easily moveable meteorological stations designed to support the growing complexity of field research projects. They were solar powered and able to be operated romotely in isolated and inaccessible locations. Many technological generations later, the PAMs have evolved into sophisticated networks of surface weather stations that can be configured to match the unique research objectives of a particular field project.
