A model for research and forecasting

In 1982, a computer forecast model originally developed at Pennsylvania State University became the PSU/NCAR Mesoscale Model, with NCAR providing remote and on-site support. Over almost thirty years, the model went through five generations of improvements and became the forbearer of today’s Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model, used by thousands of research and operational meteorologists around the world. In this figure the model is being used to simulate weather conditions for a tornado outbreak that killed more than 50 people on April 10-11, 1979.
