Margaret Thatcher Visits NCAR

In August 1990, Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher of Great Britain stopped by NCAR on her way to speak at the Aspen Institute. Her visit was the first to NCAR by a head of state. A research chemist before beginning her career in politics, Thatcher was given a personal scientific briefing by several NCAR scientists. Here, UCAR president Rick Anthes (left) and NCAR director Bob Serafin (right) greet Thatcher on her arrival at NCAR’s Research Aviation Facility. Behind are members of her entourage. The visit to Colorado was overshadowed by Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait, which occurred the same week.
